Doctor and Beauty Expert Shares How Clean Skincare Products Have Internal Benefits

Makeup and skincare products from EpiLynx by Dr. Liia are raising the bar for health in today’s beauty industry. While some products market themselves as “clean,” none hit the mark of what we consider safe for people with certain skin conditions, allergies, or even sensitive skin. Our products are not just chemically clean but medically clean as well.

The birth of a medically clean line of skincare products

EpiLynx by Dr. Liia was born out of my struggle with a gluten allergy and psoriasis. It was incredibly frustrating not being able to find skincare products guaranteed to be allergen and gluten-free. I am an oncology pharmacist and chemist. My husband, Dr. Sumant Ramachandra, is an immunologist and scientist. With over 30 years’ combined experience in pharmaceutical development, we knew we could make a difference.

Together, we decided to confront this hole in the market head-on by creating our own skincare products. We designed EpiLynx by Dr. Liia specifically to help people struggling with autoimmune disease and allergies find skincare products they can use with confidence. We produce and test every product ourselves.

The difference between chemically clean and medically clean skincare products and cosmetics

Over the last ten years, the beauty industry has increased transparency regarding ingredients and how those ingredients are sourced. There’s been a fundamental shift toward making chemically-clean and eco-friendly products.

The industry has come a long way but not far enough. Even though most brands today are chemically clean, they do not cater to sensitive skin, allergies, and skin conditions. Ensuring that skincare products claiming to be “clean” are medically clean as well as chemically clean would eliminate confusion for these customers. Clearer labeling would prevent people from exacerbating their symptoms and jeopardizing their health by using the wrong skincare products.

At EpiLynx by Dr. Liia, we start with chemically clean products. We avoid the use of chemical preservatives such as parabens and phthalates. We then go one step farther by creating products that are also medically clean. Our products are free of fragrances and allergens. We invest time and thought into our formulas and adjust them based on our customers’ requests. We are ethical and transparent in why we use specific ingredients and how they interact with each cell in the body.

Regulations regarding ingredients in clean skincare products and cosmetics

There is a direct relationship between the products you use on your skin and your internal health. Your skin is your body’s largest organ. Everything you apply to your skin will be absorbed. Some molecules, such as gluten, are too large to be absorbed through the skin, but they inevitably make their way into your body through cut, dry, or cracked skin. They can also enter the body through damaged skin due to conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. For this reason, you should have the same high standards for the products you put on your skin as you have for the food you put in your mouth.

Regulations governing ingredients used in skincare products today are not stringent enough. The Food, Drug, and Cosmetics Act does not enforce clinical trials to back up a skincare product’s claims. There should be requirements for testing to support every claim that companies in the beauty industry make. Unsupported claims only serve to confuse customers and add to the noise of an overcrowded beauty industry.

Medically-clean skincare products and cosmetics are allergen-free

Our mission is to ensure that everyone with skin sensitivity, autoimmune conditions, and allergies feels beautiful and empowered. We offer luxury skincare products developed by PharmDs at affordable prices because we truly believe everyone should have access to products that are safe to use.

At EpiLynx by Dr. Liia, our biggest strength is our customer. Over the years, we have improved the healthiness of our products by listening to our customers’ feedback.

Believe it or not, many skincare products contain gluten and are unsafe for people with celiac disease. Coconut oil is in almost every product, affecting our customers who are allergic to nut oils. Products from EpiLynx by Dr. Liia are entirely free of the fourteen most common allergens. These allergens include:

  • Celery
  • Gluten
  • Crustaceans (such as prawns, crabs, and lobsters)
  • Eggs
  • Fish
  • Lupin
  • Milk
  • Mollusks (such as mussels and oysters)
  • Mustard
  • Peanuts
  • Sesame
  • Soybeans
  • Sulfur dioxide
  • Sulfites

Clean skincare products are essential for people with sensitive skin, allergies, and other medical conditions, but they can benefit everyone. Usually, people develop allergies later in life. As you grow older, your skin changes and becomes more sensitive. When it comes to skincare products, chemically clean does not equal medically clean.
